What's New

PM Minimalist Support System & Freebies

PM Minimalist Freebies, etc.I want to make it easy for anyone to become a PM Minimalist. So I've assembled a collection of resources that will help individual project managers, project teams and entire organizations go Minimalist.

Many of these are free and several are in The Project Management Minimalist book. The PM Minimalist Support System & Freebies page at my website includes a chart that summarizes these resources and links to each of them. Check it out! (Note: I'll be adding to this grid as I make more support items available.)

The PM Minimalist "Cut the Fat" Audit: Part 1, The Sources of Project Management Bloat & Part 2, A Project Management Weight Loss Strategy Article: The PM Minimalist “Cut the Fat” Audit

In this two-part series, I introduce The PM Minimalist "Cut the Fat" Audit. The goal of this audit is to uncover and eliminate the useless PM stuff that your organization might be doing -- the stuff that swells up your projects for no good reason, wasting peoples' time and weighing down those who are trying to create your project deliverables. It includes a couple of sample tools: The "Is This Really Valuable?" Analysis and The "Fix It or Ditch It?" Survey.

Speaking of Webinars...What's Your Project Management Webinar Wish List?

I've been teaching free online public PM webinars (live video classes) for a couple of years now. (See my list of upcoming webinars here.) Every time I offer a session, I'm faced with the same choices: What's the best day of the week? What's a good time of day for the session? What's a topic people will value? So I decided to create a poll to get your feedback. You can add your voice here: Poll: Your Project Management Webinar Wish List -- Note: After you vote, click "View Results" to see the tally of all votes to date.

A Minimalist Inspiration: 37 Signals' Book Rework

(In each issue of these Updates, I intend to shine a light on one or more great examples of Minimalism -- folks who inspire me by their "less is more" approach. In this issue, I look at 37 Signals' Book Rework.)

37 Signals is a small, privately-held company that has created such products as Ruby on Rails (a web application framework) and Basecamp, a popular online project collaboration tool. These guys are fiercely independent and dedicated to doing everything possible to eliminate complexity. In doing so, they challenge all sorts of assumptions about how business is done.

In their best selling book Rework, they present a manifesto for completely "reworking" businesses. They issue logical and irreverent challenges to the way businesses structure themselves, serve their customers, manage their projects, hire people, and market themselves.

I bought the unabridged audio version of this book and started listening to it during my daily workouts at about the same time I began working on The Project Management Minimalist's second edition. Wow... what an inspiration! These daily audio "pep talks" provided lots of encouragement and helped me push through any doubts I had about my drive for PM simplicity. And I must admit that some of the items in my list of "PM Minimalist Values" have clear spiritual roots in Rework. So, thank you, 37 Signals for the inspiration!

Now why should you read (or listen to) 37 Signals' book Rework? Because it provides the broader business context for the practice of PM Minimalism. And, if you're like me, it will help strengthen your resolve that simpler is better!

Here are few quotes from the book that illustrate:

Get the idea? As you can see, these guys pull no punches. Their straight talk and logical defense of "less is more" is manifested throughout the book. So if you're looking for some ammunition to help you in your battle for PM Minimalism and organizational simplicity, this is the book for you. (Learn more at -- http://37signals.com/rework/)
